Open Work Permit

Open Work Permit

An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific. Because it is not job-specific, you will not need the following when you apply for your work permit:

  • a labour market impact assessment (LMIA)  from Employment and Social Development Canada
  • proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee

Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit. This program is particularly beneficial for international students, as it allows them to apply their skills and knowledge in a Canadian workplace, make connections, and potentially secure a pathway to permanent residency. Skilled Canadian work experience in Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) categories 0, 1, 2 or 3 that is gained through the PGWP Program helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry.

International students who have completed a program of study at a designated Canadian learning institution and have a valid study permit may be eligible for the PGWP program.

PGWPs are valid for between eight months to three years, depending on the length of your study program.
